This play makes storytelling magic, as we hear about the experiences of Alex More, who has a unique, if lonely, job working in the personalized mall in the Malibu cellar of a beloved megastar. Things take a turn when his only customer (the “Funny Lady” herself) visits the basement and befriends her young clerk. It’s a funny and fanciful tale of decadence and isolation in a make-believe universe that only a chosen few are allowed to enter. The Chicago Tribune says the show “is . . . a lot of laugh-out-loud fun.”

Through deeply heartfelt storytelling, song singing, fireworks, and a nip of psilocybin tea, the bond they make will last the rest of their lives. But the summer has to end eventually.

The Pulitzer-winning play deals with economic downturn and racial strife in the working-class factory town of Reading, Pennsylvania. The play jumps between the years 2000 and 2008 to tell the story of tensions among friends and coworkers that erupt during a labor struggle. The play has been described as "a powerful and emotional look at identity, race, economy and humanity" and has been compared to the writing of August Wilson and Clifford Odets.
